20/01/2012: Lazio caught speeding towards Honda

Reports in Italy this morning are suggesting that Lazio are on the verge of a sensational swoop for CSKA Moscow's Keisuke Honda.

Earlier this week, it was reported by LazioLand.com that Claudio Lotito had set aside 14 million euro for the current transfer campaign and that there was a mystery player at the centre of attention. With both Honda and Dzagoev widely mentioned as possibilities, speculation intensified yesterday when Igli Tare was reported to be in Russia to discuss fees with CSKA Moscow representatives.

It appears as though a bid in the region of 12 million euro has been tabled by the ex-Albania striker. The bid is broken down into a 2 million loan deal with an eventual transfer fee of 10 million to be paid later. It is not wholly clear if the said offer involves a compulsory or optional buyout clause.

Also said to be included in the deal is Stephen Ayodele Makinwa. The Lazio striker, who turned down a summer move to Pergocrema in Lega Pro is a bizzare inclusion in the deal but it could make sense to both sides. Lazio need to free up a non-EU spot for future transfer dealings in South America while CSKA Moscow are establishing a tradition of purchasing Nigerian players. Defender Chidi Odiah is somewhat of a club icon, now in his eighth season with the Russian club and last week, CSKA Moscow signed promising forward Ahmed Musa, who is also Nigerian. There may be an economic interest in bringing Makinwa to the club; CSKA Moscow are said to be supported by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich and it is perhaps no coincidence that the club are targeting players from a country with significant oil reserves.

Latest reports suggest CSKA Moscow are holding out for more money and even that Makinwa has turned the club down. The deal is far from done, but there is no doubt that the Honda rumour is gathering pace.
