20/05/2012: Who will be Lazio's next coach?

Football season in Italy is over. Lazio and Edy Reja parted ways and now the Biancoceleste administration can start the hunt for a new head coach. Some names are already up: Champions League winner Di Matteo, Mazzarri, Zola and Sinisa Mihajlovic are all connected to Lazio in recent days.

Lazio sporting director Tare had a meeting with Zola in Munich. Zola was invited to the final as a part of the glorious Chelsea. There are reports there is already a financial agreement. But now for assistant coach is mentioned Giancarlo Corradini rather than Casiraghi.

The other candidate is Roberto Di Matteo. Apparently the first contact by phone was positive. But Lazio will need to battle Liverpool and some other English clubs for him. Yet Di Matteo admits there is some nostalgia: “It will be nice to return to Italy.”

However Lazio’s choices don’t stop here. President Lotito’s dream is to land Napoli’s Walter Mazzarri. Rumors have it there could be an exchange of coaches as Reja maybe headed for a return to Napoli. The only problem for Lotito would be Mazzarri’s high 2.5 million per season salary. If the coach chooses Lazio he should be ready for around a million pay cut. If Mazzarri comes he will go for a three man defense, but not in the expense of a playmaker as he opts for 3-4-1-2.

The other candidate, highly recommended by former Lazio coach Reja Gasperini also plays a three man defense, but he sacrifices the playmaker and cost him the job and Inter – putting Snejder on the bench.

And the last and most secret option – Sinisa Mihajlovic. Lazio was linked to Mihajlovic two years ago, when Reja firstly took charge. There were some problems and the Serb was contacted, but with no consequences. It has to be taken into consideration Sinisa is very close to become a national coach of Serbia.
