  02/07/2012: Zarate in Homophobic Row
email print

Lazio's returning Argentine, Mauro Zarate has found himself at the centre of controversy after making a comment on Twitter that Roman media are branding homophobic.

The striker came under attack on Twitter from a self-proclaimed Roma fan who used a derogatory term to criticise Maurito's performance. Zarate hit back with a similarly derogatory term in relation to the Roma fan's avatar which featured a picture of Roma captain Francesco Totti. The media are now requesting that Zarate apologises for what they consider to be a homophobic term.

Homophobia in the Italian game has been under the microscope recently after Antonio Cassano suggested that he hoped there were no gay players in the locker room. Cassano later clarified his statement and the Roman media seem insistent that Zarate has to do the same, putting both the player and Lazio in a difficult predicament.
