  12/08/2012: Lazio 0-1 Getafe

Lazio went down to a fourth straight defeat to professional opposition today as Pedro Leon's rifled free-kick was enough to separate the two sides on a night that was supposed to bring in the dawn of a new horizon.

It was never going to go according to plan. Only 6,000 fans turned up for the official presentation of this new Lazio as many opted out as a show of protest against Claudio Lotito, Igli Tare, the project or 'lack of' and the constant failure on the mercato. There is a lot to be unhappy nowadays and even Vladimir Petkovic, who the fans have been patient with thus far appears to be running out of time before the season even begins.

Those that did turn up met the squad with jeers and it looked like it got to some of those on the field. It was an open game, with both sides having chances that they should have put away but it was Getafe and Pedro Leon who edged the affair.

The negatives are obvious. Lazio lost yet again and yet again, Lazio failed to get off the mark. The 4-2-3-1 was arguably our best formatin under Edy Reja but Vladimir Petkovic has been unable to get the back of the goal bulging with this side. A popular complaint about last night's display is that the level of confusion that Petkovic's footballing philosophy is creating is counterproductive. Petkovic himself has told the media that his squad will live up to expectations when it matters but if that is to be the case, it would be good to see initial signs from this pre-season at least.

There were positives. Despite losing, Lazio were in control of the game for long periods and created decent opportunities and when this is the case, usually it is because Cristian Ledesma has had a good evening and that indeed was the case. The younger guns also looked good - Cavanda was as useful as anyone last night, his speed and positive demeanour on the field is potentially an asset for Petkovic although his attitude off the field failed to endear him to Edy Reja. Once introduced to the game, Onazi also showed why he is on the receiving end of extensive hype.

Everybody else though ranged from below average to just above it and they will have to go up several gears before the season opener against Atalanta or even the home leg against Mura 05 for Europa League qualification.
