  04/10/2012: Live Commentary: Lazio - Maribor 1-0
email print
94' Lazio see it out. A 1-0 win, a narrow victory but a comfortable win in the end. Forza Lazio!

Libor Kozak is on for Floccari and Lazio have two minutes to see the game out.

Maribor win a corner, it evades almost everyone but eventually finds Hernanes but his header finds a Maribor player who strikes it through the Brazilian and off his own player. Eventually it is fired out of play and Lazio can breathe once again.

Maribor showing signs that they haven't given up the ghost. Ibraimi has his own longe-range effort but it whistles wide.

Cavanda is bursting down the left wing but there's nobody in the box. Candreva is closest but he stands still, Floccari tries but can't get it, it's cleared only as far as the walking Candreva who cracks it over the bar.

84' Mauro Zarate has 5-10 minutes to put some gloss on the result as he comes off the bench to replace Alvaro Gonzalez.

Lazio in cruise control, keeping possession. Meanwhile, Panathinaikos have equalised against Spurs and that will see Lazio top the group should the scores remain the same.

Penalty. Floccari goes down having been bundled over. In truth, he's taken an arm in the face, has failed to control it and has gone down to win the penalty. It's given, the Maribor defender is sent off and Hernanes is stepping up. Shoots, saved, hits the post, Hernanes is in for the rebound but stumbles and it's cleared for a corner. A few calamitous minutes, Lazio need to hope they don't rue the penalty miss.

Lazio are allowing Maribor to play and they've won a corner although nothing comes of it. A second goal would kill the game off but maribor appear to be lacking in belief and Lazio look short on energy.

It has settled down since Lazio got the goal. Tonight's hero however is having to come off with an injury, it's his groin and it's Onazi who takes his place.

Tavares, Maribor's undoubted dangerman has to come off with an injury. Play reconvenes with Lazio on the ball, Gonzalez finds Floccari with a long ball over the top, he takes it down beautfiully, shoots, it's saved but only as far as EDERRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSONNNNNN!!!!!!!!! GOOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!! 1-0 Lazio!

Good chance for Candreva, he meets an exquisite pass that evades the Maribor defenders but Candreva has a tight angle to beat the goalkeeper, who was very close and he can't find the goal.

Lazio have been let off the hook as the corner is hit with vicious swing. Bizzarri comes out and is nowhere and Cavanda is poorly positioned and fails to get a head on it. Fortunately, Tavares can't avoid either player with his header. It was a goal otherwise.

Cana goes in the book for a foul on Tavares.

Maribor have come out fighting, they've had all of the ball in the last few mintues and captain on the night, Andre Dias has to be alert to clear the danger. Lazio need to get on the ball.

Big chance for Ederson, Floccari contests a ball in the air but the defender wins it although it arrives at the feet of the Brazilian who turns his man and has only Handanovic to beat but he snatches his shot well wide.

Underway in the second half.

The one minute added on by the referee comes to an end and 0-0 is the scoreline, despite three shots hitting the woodwork and one goal being denied by the offside flag. We take a break and come back when the second half kicks off.

I have not fallen asleep behind the computer, but rather the game has ceased to be the attacking show it was earlier in the half. Nothing has been created for some time now...

In Athens Tottenham have taken the lead against Panathinaikos. The Greek side looks nothing like what we have come to be used to throughout the years...

A second ball for Lazio hits the post. Again Candreva send a ball towards goal and sees it bounce off the woodwork. Chances come flying as Ederson misses a clear header on the following corner.

Ederson sees his deflected shot go just wide. Handanovic would have had no chance saving the shot had it been on goal.

Ederson celebrates what he thinks is his second goal in the Lazio shirt, but a clear offside is finally called by the referee who first seemed to have missed to call it.

Lazio create their first corner, but the chance is wasted through a weak shot taken by Candreva flying high and wide.

This time Lazio is denied by the woodwork! Candreva blasts a shot from a narrow angle and Handanovic is left watching the ball hit his upright. The game is very open and there are chances at both ends at the moment.

Cana gives the ball away just outside the penalty area and Bizzarri makes a good save on a fairly weak finish by Cviljanovic. Maribor is definitely looking like the better side in attack so far in this game.

The game is starting to warm up as Dias gets a good header above goal at the other end on a cross by Hernanes.

First corner of the game goes to Maribor and a brilliant header by Milec beats Bizzarri, but is denied by the crossbar. Lazio is lucky to not be down by now.

Surely Ederson could have opened the scoring, but the Brazilian somehow fumbled the ball and lost his chance to get a proper finish at goal. On the counter the same Ederson is close to give away a penalty to the visitors, but luckily enough for Ederson and Lazio the referee gives a free kick that is easily saved by Bizzarri.

A very slow start to the game from both teams. No danger created from any side and both teams seem to be mapping each other out rather than taking the initiative.

The game has barely started and despite Maribor starting with the ball Lazio create a dangerous chance through Hernanes, but Handanovic saves the weak shot easily.

After much debate whether Petkovic would or should rotate players in this game, the starting elevens are as follows:
Lazio: Bizzarri; Konko, Ciani, Dias, Cavanda; Cana; Candreva, Gonzalez, Hernanes, Ederson; Floccari. (Marchetti, Biava, Onazi, Mauri, Scaloni, Zarate, Kozak)

Maribor: Handanovic; Milec, Rajcevic, Vidovic, Mejac; Filipovic;  Ibraimi, Mertelj, Cvijanovic; Tavares, Beric.

First home game of the Europa League will kickoff in about ten minutes. Not many tickets have been sold for this game, despite the positive start with a draw against favourites Tottenham in London a fortnight ago. Maribor is the least known team in the group, but started their international campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory against Panathinaikos in the first round.
