Lazio midfielder Cristian Brocchi has decided to retire from professional football at the age of 37.

Brocchi suffered another setback with a foot injury against Genoa and has decided, with the medical team, that he will not be able to recover. Brocchi made 437 appearances in club football, winning 10 trophies including 2 Champions League trophies and a World Club Cup.

His agent, Davide Lippi spoke to the media this afternoon:

"The medical staff announces, in accordance with Cristian Brocchi, that despite all therapeutic efforts made and surgery, there is definitely the inability to resume regular professional activity. The injury reported 26/11/2011 during the match against Juventus resulted in pain in the right foot with damage to the metatarsal. Continued treatment over the last two competitive seasons did not lead to significant results."

"Further, the injury attained in the match against Genoa on 02/03/2012 put extra damage onto the metatarsal and has been subjected to surgical treatment to reduce and stabilize the deformity. 3 months on and despite an improvement in everyday life and the pain felt by Cristian, reluctantly we communicate today something that we felt in our hearts that we didn't want to do for as long as possible. La Societa' thanks Cristian Brocchi for the professionalism shown throughout this long ordeal and wish him an equally glorious career on the sidelines."
