16/11/2013: The race for Filip Djordjevic intensifies

Filip Djordjevic will be out of contract in June 2014 with Nantes and reports suggest Lotito is trying to move fast to secure his signature for season 2014/15. Several other European sides, including Marseille, Fiorentina, Roma and Everton, are also interested in the striker so Lazio will be competing with those sides for the striker’s services.

The second injury already this season to the influential Miroslav Klose has further prompted Lotito and Tare to act fast and secure a striker. In recent times Galatasaray's Burak Yilmaz was touted as a likely candidate to join the club but negotiations stalled in the final minutes of the past two mercato’s. Since then Lotito has been under pressure to deliver a quality striker to Petkovic and this time round it looks as though he will push for Djordjevic’s transfer sooner rather than later.

The 26 year old Serbian striker was loaned out (and eventually signed) by Nantes from Red Star Belgrade in January 2008. After a modest start to his career in France, Djordjevic exploded last season. In 2012/13 he bagged 20 goals in 34 appearances and so far this season he has started splendidly with 8 in 13 games (only behind Radamel Falcao in the top scorers chart in Ligue 1).

The Biancocelesti have already made contact with the player and his agent. In February 2014 he will be free to sign a new contract with another team for the next season. Nantes have tried to renew his contract but their attempts have been in vain; which gives Lotito confidence going into the coming months.

“If I leave it would only be for an important club. I am currently the captain of Nantes and I have a great relationship with the fans, however it is clear that the attention of big clubs makes me proud”, stated Djordjevic.

“Lazio? I have heard they are interested and have made contact with my agent. I would be honoured to play for a top club like them, but at the moment I am fully concentrated on playing well for the remainder of the season and achieving our targets”; he concluded.

It is clear that Lotito has identified him as the heir to Klose for the coming seasons. Djordjevic is a powerful striker, moves well, has a great header and is skilled with his feet. It is clear that several top sides will be trying their best to sign the prolific hit man in early 2014, and for Lazio fans we hope our President is the successful negotiator as the club desperately needs a young, quality striker.
