In a press release via his lawyer Paco D'Onofrio, Vladimir Petkovic has reiterated his desire to remain manager of Lazio and has requested face-to-face talks with President Claudio Lotito to clear up an 'absurd misunderstanding.'

On December 23, Vladimir Petkovic was announced as Switzerland's new manager assuming the post Ottmar Hitzfeld will be departing after the World Cup. Under FIFA regulations, Petkovic had no obligation to inform Lazio of his plans beyond the expiration of his contract with Lazio, however, Lotito believes the way in which the deal was done is in breach of FIFA's code of ethics.

D'Onofrio has made it clear in the press release that his client has broken no rules and that Petkovic fully intends to see out his contract with Lazio. D'Onofrio also underlines the fact that Lotito was informed in advance of Petkovic's decision to sign for the Swiss national football team.

Lotito has since relieved Petkovic of his duties and placed Edy Reja in charge of training, however, Petkovic is officially the manager and unless he is formally sacked by S.S. Lazio in the coming days, Edy Reja cannot take the bench for the game against Inter on 6th January.

As a result of Petkovic's actions, it has been reported that Lazio are unwilling to pay out the remainder of Petkovic's contract and will most likely launch a legal case against Petkovic unless he accepts Lazio's terms which has been issued to him via letter. Lazio's lawyer Gian Michele Gentile has expressed his disappointment at Petkovic for responding to matters via the media and has underlined the fact that Lazio will only respond to official communications.

It is likely that Petkovic will be sacked over the weekend or on Monday morning with Edy Reja being officially registered prior to Inter regardless of how negotiations proceed, however, if Petkovic does not agree to Lazio's terms, the club may choose to initiate a legal battle.

Renzo Ulivieri, President of the Manager's Association has stated that the case is unique and that without full knowledge of the facts, it would appear that Lotito has no case against Petkovic.
