17/01/2014: A chat with Stefano Fiore
email print

It was 2004 when Stefano Fiore knocked out Juventus in the Coppa Italia with a hat trick of goals. It is a night Lazio fans remember very fondly both of the club and the very popular ex-player. In total, the Calabrian midfielder scored 17 goals in 95 appearances for the Biancocelesti.

He
spoke to Giorgia Baldinacci of Tempo ahead of the Serie A clash between two of his former clubs, Lazio and Udinese.

Both Lazio and Udinese are not having great seasons, what game are you expecting?

"Laziois in recovery mode at the moment, butonly for results and not for the beautiful game. With Reja the squad has foundthe right spirit and desire for victory. Udinese on the other hand after experiencing so many positive results in result years are now in a complicated time. This is the most difficult Udinese team Guidolin has had to manage".

Do you agree with Reja’s reappointment as Lazio coach and the sacking of Petkovic?

”Petkovic brought a breath of fresh air and a new style of play at first, but after time the results started to fade and the confidence of the players declined. Only the Coppa Italia victory over Roma hid the flaws of last season, and I think his time had come to depart.

At this moment in time Reja
was a smart choice as he knows the club, city and the Roman environment. However, I do not see his appointment as a long term one with a project in mind. It sounds as though his assignments are to guide Lazio into the top five of Serie A this season and continue on in the Europa League knockout stages. This will be very difficult and I see the Coppa Italia as the most viable way for the club to get back into
Europe next season”.

In the summer of 2013 Lotito delievered some new signings. What are your thoughts on the players he brought in?

"That market did not improve the quality of Lazio unfortunately. The only positive reinforcements from that transfer window to date are the youngsters Perea andKeita. Felipe Anderson has talent but is yet to prove that he is a worthy investment".

What should Lazio do in this January transfer market?

"The defense showed several gaps in the early part of the seasona and that department is the one which needs the most quality brought in. Another important transfer should be a striker to eventually replace Klose. For me, Quagliarella’s characteristics would be perfect for this Lazio".

Hernanes could leave soon. Would you agree on his sale?

"He works very hard but maybe his time at Lazio has come to an end. However, I do not think he will leave this January without the club have identified the right substitute. Felipe Anderson may one day take over that position but for now I do not think he is ready”.
