  16/02/2014: Reja: "The Wrong Approach"
email print

Lazio succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against Catania today in the early kick-off which does absolutely no favours for the Biancocelesti in their quest to qualify for Europe. Edy Reja was particularly annoyed with the manner of the defeat:

"A game that went wrong from the start. You cannot concede after only 40 seconds. The wrong approach, but we did better in the remainder of the first half. In the second half, we managed to play worse, losing Biglia's quality on the ball."

"I made the change because I wanted a change of pace in midfield, but unfortunately that did not occur. But it was in defence where we made our mistakes."

"We still have a chance in the fight for Europe, but a win in Catania today would have helped us a lot."

Asked why he opted for Mauri, who scored on his full return from suspension, rather than Keita, Reja's explanation was simple:

"I felt Stefano would give us more in both attack and defence. I expected more from Candreva, Lulic and Klose. Perhaps the heat [temperature in the region of 20 degrees celsius] affected their energy levels."

Asked about his decision to play 4-3-3 over 3-4-2-1, Reja restated the opinion he gave prior to the game about it being a decision to make Lazio more potent in attack:

"I wanted to get the midfielders closer to Klose in attack, but Catania caused us problems and prevented that."
