  18/03/2014: Petkovic: "I have a clear conscience"
email print
In an interview with, Vladimir Petkovic opened up on his time at Lazio:

"I'm sorry to have left the project in progress. I'm sure with time, we would have achieved great results. However, having been stabbed in the back, I preferred to answer with silence. I thank Lotito and Tare for gambling on me, but I have a clear conscience. It is not my betrayal and people know this. In fact, Lazio fans stop me on the street and say 'you are a great man'.

Petkovic was critical of the methods of tackling racism in Italy and suggested the media are largely to blame for the current unrest at Lazio:

"The ban [closing of the stadium in Europa League following audible racist chants] was a big loss to the team. In Italy, it is excusable to argue about these things rather than solve the problems. As a result of that, the stadiums are empty."

"Last year, we played in front of 60,000 spectators and there were no whistles or protest against the club. Without ethics and correct communication, there is no respect. In Rome, there are 20 daily football talk shows - in Milan, there are two. Certain phenomena need to be corrected."

"Rome for me was 'The Great Beauty'. I received so much from Lazio and also gave a lot. Defeating Roma in the Coppa Italia was an important chapter in the history of the club. It's a shame there is no gratitude in football."

"If in the future there is a serious proposal from another club in Serie A, I will happily consider it."
