31/07/2014: Pioli to follow Premier League fitness lead

Having spent much of Auronzo di Cadore working on tactics, Stefano Pioli is expected to dedicate the latter half of pre-season training to fitness.

Corriere dello Sport believe training sessions will now be shorter but much more intense, in order to try and replicate match conditions.

Pioli is said to be taking his lead from Premier League sides who often play three times a week at a swashbuckling pace. The explanation could lie in muscle fibres, and Pioli is devising a training regime that revolves around this. The manager will also use GPS and satellite-imaging in order to calculate how much distance is covered by each player in 90 minutes and any variances in acceleration that occur during this period in order to assess whether a player is tired or not giving their all.

It is believed Pioli is looking to get off to a fast start this season and take advantage of the fact that Lazio have less games than direct competitors, however, it could also be a case that he is drawing on his own previous experiences and those of Lazio. Lazio are known for performing well in the first half of the season and tailing off, while Pioli's Bologna side often had one superb half of a season and one that was less than satisfactory. This is something Pioli will have to address with a new team.
