08/01/2015: What is the best individual Derby della Capitale display?
email print

Last weekend, Felipe Anderson turned in one of those magical displays you see once in a season, if you are lucky. A week early some might say, but expectations are now high for the Derby della Capitale.

Some have had their finest moments in the Rome derby. Renzo Burini is known for his match-winning performances in the 1950s, while Orlando Rozzoni's quickfire double in the derby of 19th March 1961 shellshocked Roma. Giorgio Chinaglia and Beppe Signori lived up to their reputations when it mattered and in recent times, the likes of Tommaso Rocchi and Hernanes have made vital contributions. Here are some of the memorable displays through the eyes of the LazioLand community.

Luca Marchegiani (2nd November 1997)

Lazio came from a 2-0 loss at home to Atalanta in the previous round and were 4 points behind Roma in the table. A win here was necessary to keep up with the top teams, a loss and the season would almost be over already.

Nervous start to the match, but after 7 minutes referee Collina shows the red card to Favalli after a Roma player is on the way through the Lazio defence. One man down and 83 minutes to go. Impossible. Season over.

Roma takes advantage of being a man up and puts enormous pressure on Lazio. The Lazio team seems to have lost their spirit after the sending off. Everyone but one. Luca Marchegiani, who turns into a human wall.

Roma creates chance after chance, but the Lazio keeper stands in the way of everything, throwing himself and his hands all over the place and keeps his team in the match. A truly inspirational performance by Luca and the teams go into the half timebreak with an unfair 0-0 result.

Something must've been said in HT, someone lighting a fire under every lightblue ass and Marchegiani's display as an obvious factor to help his team go out and show what Lazialita is all about. Non mollare mai.

Lazio goes on to score 3 great goals, first Mancini finds the top right corner with a beautiful move through the Roma defence, then Casiraghi with a great volley and finally Nedved with some nice touches sends the Curva to the moon.

Moments of lack of concentration gives Roma a consolation goal which makes Luca a little upset cause he deserved a clean sheet but nonetheless, this victory is his and after that match he cemented his place in my heart and memory as one of my favourite Lazio players of all time.

Fabio Liverani (6th January 2005)

So many feelings in a derby and so many performences that you want to highlight from an emotional and romantic viewpoint. I wish I could have answered Klose or Brocchi or Di Canio on this question but I simply can't, I have to put the objective glasses on and go with Fabio Liverani on 06/01/2005. Don't think I've ever seen someone that good. He was pure world class. Two magnificent assists and rarely a missed pass. Completely dominating the midfield, almost like he was skating while the others were running.

I always had issues seeing him in a Lazio shirt after what he did when Roma won the Scudetto, and I honestly still have, but that's not the point. I've realized in older days that his display in that particular game deserves nothing but my praise and gratefulness. He might have been supporting them, but he certainly didn't show it that night and he always handled the situation with class. I can respect that.

And imagine how the romanisti felt that night...

Valon Behrami (19th March 2008)

The best and most memorable game of all derbies I've watched must be 19/03/2008.

Roma took the lead with Behrami's erroneous clearance, which gifted Taddei an involuntary goal, but Lazio came back with Pandev's goal. Lazio fielded 3 forwards, Pandev, Rocchi and Bianchi, and they all contributed that day. Bianchi earned a penalty and Rocchi slotted it in confidently to take the lead. However Roma equalized by Perotta's shot out of the chaos.

Hope was seemingly lost, but the players didn't give up. Pandev cross to the far post to Mauri, who seemingly shot off goal, but actually sent the ball to Behrami, who was sprinting up front for a powerful tap-in. The last minute goal sent Roma to despair and Lazio won the game. Delio Rossi ran all the way on the tracks as well as Behrami, who redeemed himself and marked his name in Lazio history. The victory was dedicated to Gabriel Sandri.

Cristian Brocchi (October 16th 2011)

Brocchi gets my vote because he gave us something we had needed in previous derbies... the heart of a gladiator willing to fight for the club. The team were behind and he kept leading them on the pitch and was using his physique to destroy Roma's midfield.

He gave us something that day that I have not seen in a derby since...

Hernanes (8th April 2013)

Hernanes was having one of his better games and then he struck a wonder goal. Things looked good. Later we got a penalty and Hernanes steps to take it. Unfortunately this was his 1st ever miss for Lazio in Serie A. After that Hernanes was giving even more, fighting for the team. His soft magical touch and dribbling made Roma players look so bad. But then, he had to cover Radu who has attacking too courageously, Hernanes made a poor tackle, Roma got a penalty and made it 1-1. Later Biava got a red card and things were looking bad. Luckily the game ended 1-1 but for me this was probably the best game Hernanes played for us even if he missed a penalty and caused one.
