  30/10/2015: Preview: Lazio - Milan
email print

Lazio return home to Rome to welcome AC Milan to the Stadio Olimpico. Lazio are coming off yet another disappointing loss away at Bergamo to Atalanta while AC Milan appear to be finding form under new boss Mihalovic and are coming off two successive wins to both Sassuolo and Chievo. Lazio currently sit in 6th place in the Serie A table with 18 points and AC Milan are in 8th place only two points adrift of Lazio. This will be a match in which both squads will hope not too lose and fall further adrift from League leaders Roma and Napoli, Inter, Fiorentina and Sassuolo who all lie lurking and are currently in European football positions.

Lazio were once again exposed defensively by Atalanta and were regrettably unable to add to their first half lead to seal the full three points, killer instinct was nowhere to be seen. Lazio have some injury concerns that still remain but will also welcome back both Radu and Mauricio from small muscle tissue injuries, Djordjevic and Matri are both available for Pioli up front. Unfortunately for Lazio, De Vrij, Parolo and Keita will be unavailable; Keita will be the quickest to return from the infirmary and may possibly be available to Pioli for the Rosenborg Europa League tie on Thursday.

Marchetti should pick up the start for Lazio in goal; neither goal was his fault against Atalanta. In defense for Lazio, Mauricio should pick up a start in the center and join back up with Gentiletti. Radu is available on the left but Lulic is Pioli’s preferred option and he should pick up the start. Basta will have every opportunity to make up for the own goal on Wednesday in Bergamo, this was a fluke own goal and he was out of shape when the cross came into the Lazio box in extremely wet conditions, more of a concern was the way that the Lazio defense was stretch prior to the cross.

In the middle for Lazio, Pioli will likely field his preferred 2-3 formation now that Biglia has returned from injury, both him and Onazi should start in the deeper midfielder roles, Biglia’s spot kick against Atalanta was brilliantly executed. Cataldi may feature for Lazio in this contest as Lazio may search to rest some legs as matches are coming fast and furious. In front of Biglia and Onazi, we should see both Anderson and Candreva on the flanks, likely in between them in the play maker role Mauri will pick up a start, his experience in such a match will be valuable and Savic could potentially require some rest. Up front in the lone striker role we should see Klose pick up the start, he is more effective in the starting role and Djordjevic or Matri are more likely to come on early in the second half to provide an injection of pace up front.

This is a match that Lazio will enter with immense pressure on their shoulders; this is directly in part to the four losses they have picked up in only ten Serie A matches. Both squads will enter this match with the intention to come away with three points in order to keep pace with the league leaders. Milan will play Lazio with a sound technical plan clearly outlined by Mihalovic, he will seek to exploit their weakness and have studied exactly what they are. Lazio must play in unison and reduce the threat of being spread and exposed at the back by their midfield playing tighter to the back line and tracking back more effectively. This is a match that all Laziali will be watching faithfully in hope that yet another home win can be achieved on Sunday
.
Forza Lazio!
