Recent reports in Italian media suggest that Algerian Mourad Meghni will be playing his last season with Lazio. In a previous report delivered by LazioLand.com we mentioned that Meghni issued an ultimatum of play me or leave me in the summer to the biancoceleste.
Now these reports are intensifying amidst news of interest from different clubs, with Bordeaux added to the list of suitors.
As reported by Le Buteur an Algerian football site which in turn reported news from La Gazette des Transferts, Bordeaux have recently closed in on the defender and reportedly want to take Meghni on Loan with a right to purchase for a value of 0.5 million euros.
While the authenticity of interests could be valid, the reports mentioning the form of the loan could be contested, as the Algerian has a contract that expires on June 2012, and thus will end up leaving for free next season and Lazio will not be getting a dime with such an offer.
What is certain is that the player and those around him are not happy with the situation. Earlier this month, his brother gave an interview to AfricaFoot and reiterated that if Mourad does not find any space at Lazio, he is going to leave. His exact words were: "It will be better for him, and he knows it".
Said, Mourad's brother added: "It has been now 2 years without football, people have forgotten about him, but hopefully once he leaves Lazio, interest will gather around him."
It is clear that the player wants more playing time. But what is clear also is that while Meghni has not played for nearly 18 months, much of it was due to his injury and not due to technical choices by Edy Reja. Moreover Tare has recently declared that they look to the player as part of their future. It would be understandable that Reja will hesitate to include him in the final games of the season, as these are crucial games, and not games that can be used to help someone get back to fitness.
The coming summer might be Meghni's last in Rome. It was a shame that the player only played a few games for Lazio. When fielded, Meghni's performances were satisfactory, but the tale of Meghni was one of injury and bad luck. With all the interest piling up from Kayserispor (as reported by LazioLand.com) and now Bordeaux, Lazio might prefer to cash in on the player rather than lose him for free next year.
