On the day, 13 years ago, in 1998 Lazio had a date with destiny.  A turning point that was the beginning of a glorious period in the history of S.S. Lazio.

Lazio had an average season in the Serie A, but in the Coppa Italia they were rocking along, eliminating Napoli, Roma and Juventus to reach the final.

A.C. Milan was the team to beat, also having a poor season in the Serie A.
First game was at San Siro, and one goal from George Weah decided the game, 1-0.

Some weeks later, the return game at the Olimpico.  In the first half not much happened, it stayed 0-0.  After the break, the game really began.
An Albertini freekick, took a deflection on Nedved to give Milan a 0-1 lead.  Lazio where 0-2 down on aggregate, so they had to score 3 more times to win the Coppa.

It took 7 minutes to give some joy at the Olimpico.  A deep ball on Mancini, a perfect assist for Gottardi, who couldn't miss the 1-1.  Lazio kept on attacking, knowing they needed 2 more goals.  And 3 minutes later, Casiraghi brought down by Maldini, penalty Lazio !  Jugovic slotted the ball passed Rossi, Lazio 2-1 up, one goal to go.  Casiraghi was close to score the 3rd, but the ball hit the post.

But then, the 65th minute, a Lazio corner, a scrimmage inside the box, and Nesta from close-by to score the 3-1.  The 62.000 laziali at the Olimpico went ballistic.

From hell to heaven in 18 minutes.  Milan tried to score, but Lazio countered Milan back.  Six minutes of extra time, still 3-1, one Milan goal would break the dream into thousand pieces.  But Lazio held firm at the back, and referee Treossi blowed his whistle.  The Coppa Italia 1998 is for la Lazio !

Maybe that game turned the history for la Lazio our way.
It turned our way towards the glory that brought us the Cup Winners Cup 1999 and the UEFA Supercup 1999.
And more glory followed, the historic 'treble' in 2000: Scudetto, Coppa Italia and Supercoppa.

Grande Lazio !
