31/05/2011: Mauri to stay, Sapunaru lined up as Lichtsteiner replacement
email print

Stefano Mauri's agent has been driving Lazio fans up the wall recently. Firstly, he claimed there was an offer from Zenit St. Petersburg which Stefano would have to consider given the way he has been treated by Lazio fans. Soon after, the agent denied that the offer had ever been made. Now, the agent claims that Mauri will stay at Lazio and that there is nothing to worry about. Case closed for the timebeing.

Meanwhile, a whole host of names have been mentioned as replacements for Stephan Lichtsteiner before his suitors Juventus have even tabled a bid. Jean, a defensive midfielder at Sao Paolo who can rather handily play at right-back too is a candidate who has been given the thumbs-up by Hernanes. However, in the last 24 hours, a new name has emerged; Cristian Sapunaru. The Romanian right-back who has been successfully keeping the highly-rated Nicolas Otamendi out of Porto's starting eleven would be a like-for-like replacement. His value has surely increased in a vintage year for the Portugeuse side but they may consider selling him as the player was suspended for five months by the club in 2010 for unacceptable behaviour.

Sapunaru should feature in Romania's UERO 2012 qualification clash with Bosnia. According to Corriere dello Sport, Igli Tare should be present to witness him as well as potential acquisition Senad Lulic.
