  18/06/2011: Marchetti on Monday
email print

Cagliari president Massimo Cellino has confirmed that the Marchetti transfer saga is about to come to an end. Marchetti has been a primary target for Lotito ever since Daniel Fonseca, the agent of Uruguayan wantaway Fernando Muslera announced publicly that his client no longer wanted to be a part of the setup in Rome.

A number of factors have sped up the process. Firstly Edy Reja agreed in prinicple that no matter what happens in the upcoming mercato, Fernando Muslera will not play for Lazio. Secondly, Reja gave his blessing to the transfer of Marchetti promising to Lotito that he will become the undisputed number one goalkeeper. Consequently, Lotito met Marchetti's agent last week in Milan and put a deal in place. It now seems that the release clause has been activated and Cellino will be forced to relinquish his hold of Federico.

The Cagliari president told LaLazioSiamoNoi:

"I spoke with Federico's attorney yesterday. The case will be resolved by Monday."

Cellino seemingly took a parting shot against Lotito whom the Cagliari president has a fond disliking of:

"Lazio deserve this [the transfer of Marchetti]. Lotito does not."

Marchetti is a mouthwatering prospect. Along with Albano Bizzarri and Fernando Muslera, Marchetti was one of the top goalkeepers in the 2009-10 season, earning a place in Italy's World Cup squad. When first choice Gianluigi Buffon was forced out of the team with injury, Marchetti deputised but was found wanting as a poor Azzurri squad were easily dumped out of the tournament. After declaring his desire to leave Cagliari in a remarkably similar vain to how Muslera has told the world of his dissatisfation, Marchetti found himself to be a fixture on the Cagliari bench. It now appears as though he will get the chance to shine again in Rome.

I like how you point out the similarity of the Muslera/Marchetti situation.
