30/06/2011: Lazio track Giovani dos Santos

Tuttosport claim Lazio are hot on the heels of Mexican playmaker Giovani dos Santos. The player, who is currently owned by English side Tottenham Hotspur is said to be available for a fee of 5 million euro.

Dos Santos began his professional career emerging from the youth ranks at Barcelona under the guidance of twice Champions League winning coach Pep Guardiola. However, when Guardiola took charge of the first team, he encouraged Barcelona to sell the Mexican, seeing no place for him in his now successful side.

Tottenham Hotspur were keen to capture him and managed to do so. Over the last three years, dos Santos has been on loan to gain experience. He first went to second tier Ipswich Town and was sent back with only a handful of appearances. The following season, Galatasaray took an interest but they too struggled to find a role for him. He spent last season at relegation threatened Racing Santander in Spain where he scored three goals in a total of only 12 games.

It is thought that Tottenham no longer see dos Santos as a part of their plans and are in negotiations with both Real Zaragoza and Sevilla for the sale of the Mexican international who is currently occupied with the Copa America. Tuttosport believe Lazio have now entered the race.
