04/07/2011: Lotito: “In the coming months we will work to make the squad smaller”
email print

With Lorik Cana and Frederico Marchetti expected to sign for Lazio as early as tomorrow, there is no doubt the club has worked hard so far this summer to add wanted players to Edy Reja’s team. The new additions, including Lulic, Klose and Konko, give reason for the Lazio patron to contemplate another issue in depth; the squad size is today as high as 40 players, while Reja prefers to only have 27 with him to Auronzo di Cadore on Thursday, and for the new season.

With Carrizo (Argentina) and Gonzalez (Uruguay) in South America attending Copa America for their respective national teams, the players that will follow Reja to Auronzo are 29 in number and as follows: Goalkeeper: Marchetti, Bizzarri and Berardi; Defenders: Biava, Dias, Stendardo, Diakité, Garrido, Scaloni, Del Nero, Lulic, Konko, Zauri and Cavanda; Midfielders: Hernanes, Matuzalem, Cana, Ledesma, Mauri, Brocchi, Foggia and Bresciano; Attackers: Kozak, Sculli, Zarate, Klose, Rocchi, Floccari and Ceccarelli. Added to these, the following players stay in Rome and are therefore seen as not being a part of the plan for the coming season and Lotito is actively seeking destinations for the players: Iannarilli, Artipoli, Bonetto, Tuia, Sevieri, Luciani, Coppola, Ricci, Mendicino, Barreto and Makinwa.

Despite the squad size being as large as it is, Lotito is not done with transfers to Lazio. The president has clearly stated another attacker is on the way, with Djibril Cisse being tipped as the main target. It is also widely believed Lazio is seeking at least one addition to the defensive line as a number of central defenders have been linked to the outfit lately.

Repubblica.it reports that the players that are most likely to leave in the coming weeks are Pasquale Foggia and Sergio Floccari. The latter is believed to be the reason why Cisse has yet not been added, as the 29 year old is reluctant to leave Lazio to join Parma and according to reports Floccari wants to hear straight from Reja that he is not a part of the coach’s plan for the coming season before agreeing on a transfer away from the capital. Also a return to Genoa could be an option for Floccari, as well as moving to Palermo. Foggia, on the other hand, is ready to lower his wages in order to join Marco Giampaolo at Cesena, but as they cannot pay cash for the player an exchange including Marco Parolo is at hands. Other players that are mentioned to be on their way out are Garrido (Cesena, as a part of the Parolo deal, or Real Sociedad), Zauri (if not Garrido, then Zauri could be used in the Cesena deal), Scaloni (Estudiantes), Stendardo, Diakité and Ceccarelli.

It is evident Lazio is yet far from being done on the transfer market. With too many players in the existing squad, and promises of “an attacker on the same level and same quality as Klose” given by the Lazio president, the summer looks as only have started for the binacocelesti fans...
