30/07/2011: Zarate left out of Villarreal squad!

Tomorrow Lazio will play Villarreal in a friendly in Spain. Earlier the same day Lazio will face Reggina at Fiuggi. Since coach Reja has a squad larger than desired, this has been seen as both a way to give all players some playing time, but for the more interested it is also a clear indication on which players are seen as integral parts of Reja’s plans for the coming season.

What has been labeled “Lazio A” is to travel to Spain, while “Lazio B” is to remain in Italy, and a couple of days ago the lists contained very few surprises, including Mauro Zarate in the list of 16 players leaving to Spain.

Today repubblica.it reports that things have changed the last few days, and it is believed Reja is sending signals that the Argentinean better be sold this summer as he continues to be a player the coach struggles to find a place for in the team. When the news of Zarate’s absence in “Lazio A” reached the thousands of fans following the training today many reacted negatively, as the player is still one of the most popular amongst followers. The player himself did not seem worried though, as he answered the questions around a possible departure with smiles and repeating the statement “I will stay with Lazio”.

Claudio Lotito is yet to receive any formal offers for Zarate meeting the €20-25 million price tag. Paris Saint Germain, one of the interested teams seem to have opted for Palermo’s Pastore, while Atletico Madrid are going for Osvaldo. It remains to be seen if any other suitor comes asking for Zarate, but more and more point towards a season very much like the last  - with Reja preferring other players over the lively attacker.

Worth noting is that also three other expected “Lazio A”-players are being left in Italy. Rocchi, Brocchi and Cana are all, together with Zarate, believed to face Reggina rather than Villarreal. This, on the other hand, is being used as an argument for the fans that all these players will be a part of the future Lazio, but that they are staying in Italy because Reja wants them to get the full 90 minutes tomorrow. Sergio Floccari, who is on the verge of joining Fiorentina, is now included in the Villarreal squad after having been placed in “Lazio B” a few days back. The player has today manifested he wants to stay with Lazio the coming season, but everything seems to in line for the striker to play in Firenze once the season starts.

Lastly, repubblica.it reports, after having followed the final training before the departure, the following eleven players are to start against Villarreal: Marchetti, Scaloni, Biava, Dias, Radu, Mauri, Ledesma, Matuzalem, Hernanes, Cisse and Klose.
