16/08/2011: Cragnotti: "Lazio fans deserve a great team"
email print
Sergio Cragnotti is the most successfull Lazio president of all time having guided the club to 7 trophies in 10 years. The main highlights were the Cup Winner's Cup in 1999, followed by the victory over Manchester United in the European Super Cup and the Scudetto in 2000.

What do you think of Lazio's transfer campaign so far?
"I haven't followed it well enough to express an opinion. We hope to get good results because the fans deserve it, they deserve a great team. The city of Rome is the capital and the Olimpico is beautiful, so I think that Lazio and Rome itself must rely on the 'Capitoline' football. I hope this year president Lotito is finally giving us some great satisfaction".

Do you believe the club is on the right track?
"I believe that to make a great team you need certain points. The president, the coach and the 'fixed points' of the squad have to mix with the newcomers to build a great team. I hope this will occur as soon as possible. There are good conditions this year".

The construction of a stadium could also help the growth, one of the flagship ideas of Lotito?
"Certainly yes. We presented the first draft back in '98 but the problem so far is that a football club has not been allowed to build it's own stadium. Only Juventus have managed, as they took an old project, already authorised, but now I think it would be very difficult".

Can you explain better?
"We are experiencing an economic and financial crisis at international level which embraces all areas. I think it would be very difficult to finance the project which requires heavy investment as you need 300/400 million Euros to make a multi-purpose stadium. I believe the country has more important things to solve for the future".

Do you have a message for Lazio fans who may have been hit by the crisis?
"Certainly, with pleasure. I wish all the Lazio fans and editors a happy 'ferragosto'. I hope that Lazio can bring us all joy, and for this I wish Lotito luck and urge Lazio fans to stay close to the team".
